Red, White & Blue: A Rainbow Tour of Wedding Gowns

We've crossed a lengthy path since Queen Victoria commenced the craze for white weddings. Colors are sneaking into the gowns in the form of royal red trim, bright blue sashes, crisp black embroidery or even a dress prepared entirely from flame-red satin. Bounty of colors haven't made much of a spatter in today's pool of bridal possibilities, not since they lack charm, but since they come laden with certain unsavory meanings.

Marry in Gray? (Probably) No Way

You won't find many brides in gray, no matter how much it suits them. Reason? Its chronological association with the hoi polloi (for instance, a governess or house servant).

It's Okay to Think Pink

Pink was forever a great choice, but until lately it seemed a little too girlish and frivolous for wedding. Not long ago, you may get hit with a few Barbie remarks if you donned one. But credit to the power of televised celebrity weddings, it's now completely safe to hug your not-so-inner pinkophile.

Red freshly overcame a comparable prejudice, having long been linked with wanton women. But the color's gaining haze throughout Europe.

 
Enter the Earth Tones: Brown and Green

You'd more likely to see a brown bride someplace in Greenwich Village than the Upper East Side ... although mochas and chocolate browns are present power colors when it comes to bridesmaids' attire.

Another gorgeous shade is green. Plenty of lore relates green with the serpents, fairies, and even more questionable personalities and behaviors. In fact, the fairies were said to take felony if you donned their signature color on the wedding day, though why they'd object isn't simple to understand (but then, they by no means were a reasonable lot).

At whichever rate, the infrequent modern bride sees green as the color of growth and connectedness and wears it to her wedding, all the while thumbing her nose at the fairies.

 Bridal in Blue

History, on the other hand, shows some colors were an immense hit with brides, and one of them was blue.
Apart from blue's relation with the Virgin Mary and its insinuation that the bride was "all she must be," blue also caught up a satisfaction-guaranteed clause concerning the fiancée. In short, as per a legend, a bride in blue was certain to enjoy a faithful husband 'till death did them part. What supplementary could you possibly ask for?
